Spring Containers

November 9, 2016

Despite the mild winter we are experiencing here in Calgary it is only the end of February and you know spring is along way away for us.  You also know it’s gonna snow again. However the garden centers, home improvement stores even the grocery stores are full of spring flower teasers.

I decided I’ve got to play with some dirt and plants. We actually call it soil, but dirt just sounds messier and more fun.

With my container measurement in mind, I headed to a local garden centre to see what I might find.

I chose this combination for the contrast of light green and dark green colours.  Fine textured moss vs. the large coarse leaves of the Primulas. Fine yellow tips of the moss vs. the large yellow flowers of the Primulas. Yellow is a sure indication of spring.

Back home I collect everything I need and set it on my kitchen table.

Yes, I am playing with dirt in my kitchen. If anyone in my family  were to try this, I would probably lose it.

I pre-soak my potting soil. It shouldn’t be too dry or too wet. I grab a handful and squeeze. When it sticks together like this, it’s Goldilocks good.

I prep my container.

And plant. My container is 10” wide and 30” long so I went with a simple linear look.

It’s just like springtime!
